Regent Street is a major shopping destination in the heart of London. Along the stretch of road stand some of Britain’s most popular and historic stores, including Hamleys Toy Store, which opened in 1881, and the luxury department store Liberty, which opened in 1875. But last Saturday, Regent Street not only attracted those seeking luxury clothing and toys; the street also enticed motor junkies as its hosted the annual Regent Street Motor Show. The motor show promised a ‘showcase of 125 years of motoring including veteran, vintage, classic, and modern-day cars’, and it certainly delivered. Last year the event was a huge success after attracting around 400,000 visitors, and this year it triumphed once again.

So what when on last Saturday?

The Go Ultra Low campaign returned to Regent Street this year, and promoted some of the latest electric motors. A range of vehicles, from city cars, family hatchbacks, 4x4s and sports cars, were all on display for visitors to admire, and there were plenty of experts on hand to answer all of your questions.

All visitors who met the standard requirements were even able to test-drive some of the electric cars on display, which included big names like BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Renault and VW. If you are thinking about joining the 115,000 other people who currently own an electric car, then the Regents Street Motor Show would have been the perfect place to get all the information, statistics and even testing, that you’d need to make the decision. The benefits of electric cars are endless, but the most important ones to remember are, it’s kinder to the environment and gentler on the bank account!

If you missed this exciting opportunity, visit the Go Ultra Low page here, and read up on all the information there is to know about electric driving.

If you are more a fan of the classics then this weekend’s spectacular motor show would not have disappointed. Over 100 vintage car owners journeyed to London’s famous street to proudly display their stunning masterpieces. The enthusiastic owners had clearly put a lot of time and effort into restoration works and were more than happy to engage in conversation with the inquisitive visitors. This year there were two additions to the Veteran car zone; the Royal Automobile Club’s Pit Stop mobile catering unit, which offered a selection of tasty snacks and drinks that kept the visitors going throughout the day, and Harrods fantastic display of vintage vehicles. Both were brilliant and popular additions to this year’s show.

One of the highlights of the event was of course the Concours d’Elegance, the vintage car competition that was judged by a panel of experts, including Edd China, who also joined a convoy of around 400 pre-1905 cars that journeyed from London’s Hyde Park, to Madeira Drive in Brighton yesterday morning. The winner of the event was Malcolm Ginns, and his beautifully restored 1903 Darracq pictured with the judging panel below.

As usual, a number of colourful and stylish looking sports cars were on display for all the motor junkies out there to drool over. The Regent Street Motor Show had such a diverse range of unique cars; it would have been unfortunate if you made the mistake of leaving your camera at home! This year, Dare To Be Different or D2BD, set up a station at the motor show. The organisation was created to promote the participation of females, not just on the track but also in all aspects of the motoring sport and other perceived male-dominated industries. D2BD planned a day full of fun and activities, like the ‘pit stop challenge’ and ‘beat the batak’, which both received a great reception from the thousands of visitors who attended.

Entertainment

There was so much entertainment around on Saturday that it could easily have kept you occupied all weekend. The Top Gear Experience pod was open all day and allowed the huge number of F1 fans out there to experience what it would be like to drive in the seat of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1. The song and dance troupe, West End Kids, performed captivating dance routines each hour from 10:30am until 15:30 pm, so that everyone was smiling and entertained throughout the entire day. But even when the dancers weren’t performing, there were plenty of musicians gracing the street with wonderful melodies to keep everyone’s energy levels high as the chilly weather took over London’s famous street.

The annual Regent Street Motor Show is one that should never be missed. There was so much to see and it was all completely free, so if you were busy this weekend and missed the splendid display, make sure you think about the Regent Street Motor Show next year!
